Make us think more mathematically! Do you remember being frustrated when trying to understand multiplication, division, and fractions? My students need to understand these math concepts more conceptually. With the use of manipulatives it makes math more hands on and allows it to come to life.
I have a classroom full of 31 vibrant third graders.
They are extremely bright, considerate, and eager to learn new things. Our school, located in Southern Idaho, is very passionate about students and we strive to involve everyone in the learning process. We seek to find new and emerging ways to help our students learn to their fullest potential. Overall, my students come from a different range of backgrounds, have varying learning levels and difficulties so the use of manipulatives can really enhance the learning process for all.
My Project
Cuisenaire rods are an amazing manipulative to use for a myriad of math concepts. By using cuisenaire rods my students will have a visual aid that they can physically manipulate to better understand multiplication, division, fractions, measurement, etc. I will be able to do a myriad of activities using the rods. Marilyn Burns is very well known for her many books filled with math problems for K-6. Students must be able to explain their mathematical thinking and by having visual aids that can enhance the learning process. Several of Marilyn Burn's activities require the use of cuisenaire rods and I would like my students to be able to do the different activities. All in all, with the use of cuisenaire rods my students will learn the value of fractions, be able to understand math properties, build arrays to work on both multiplication and area, and the list goes on.
This project is so important because the use of math manipulatives can really enhance my students learning.
My students are required to explain their thinking, rather than just walk through the motions. Math can be very challenging for many students. By providing them with these manipulatives they can be used in a myriad of ways. The support is especially important now because we are not provided with the funding to buy these resources. Thanks so much!
