This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from low-income families that are of Hispanic and African-American descent. Most of the students speak two languages and struggle with the transitions between the languages. Some students can not afford basic school supplies, get a good night sleep, concentrate on their educational success due to home issues that some adults never have to think about.
It is my job to provide a safe and effective environment for a successful academic future.
I focus on each of my students' needs through small group and one on one work. It is my goal to keep students engaged and focused while in small groups. I have to be very creative with this due to our schools limited funding for extra materials. These materials would help my students stay focused and productive during their center time.
My Project
My students need to build their foundational skills of Math before they can excel at higher level thinking Math strategies. I have a classroom full of eager Mathematicians who crave number knowledge and want to learn new things. These math materials will provide them with different strategies to use to solve problems. As a teacher I need to find every possible way to reach my student’s needs. I feel these differentiated, leveled math books will target the skills that my students are lacking. Word problems are difficult to begin with, but if you don’t have the foundational skills you can’t even begin to try and solve them.
