This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Please help me provide my students with the opportunity to explore mathematical concepts, while reading.
I am a fourth grade teacher at a K-5 Title One elementary school in Mississippi.
Due to the financial crisis that our state is facing, we have received several budget cuts. My students are excited about learning. I feel that it is my job as their teacher to make sure that they stay excited about learning, regardless of our setbacks.
My Project
I believe that providing my students with the ability to read with understanding and the ability to apply mathematical concepts is the greatest gift that I can give them. Although my students enjoy our math lessons, many of them are ready to be challenged even more. My students, like many students, do not learn math well by just reading about it in the textbook. I believe that my students would benefit from seeing how math is used in everyday life.
I would like to use mathematical children’s literature to stimulate interest, enjoyment, and confidence in my students. I feel that stories provide contexts in which mathematical concepts can be presented together with opportunities to think critically, solve problems, and make connections to students’ knowledge about the world. In order to help my students connect reading and math, we need 15 children’s literature books. The students will read the books and complete projects that are based on the books.
By funding our project, you will make it possible for my students to improve in both reading comprehension and mathematics.
Please help my students become mathematical investigators!
