Mathematical 3D Printing

Help me give my students the opportunity to create mathematical models of real-world figures that they can 3D print in order to draw conclusions and build mathematical reasoning skills.

My Students

We are a high school in a rural school in a county where there is a minimal industry. Providing students with access to a 3D printer allows them to create different structures that they might not otherwise have the ability to see and experience.

My Project

The goal for this 3D printer is to allow students in an Algebra 2 class to create tactile representations of different mathematical models. The main project that I am seeing this machine for is so that students can utilize Google Expeditions to adventure around the world and find a landmark that they are interested in modeling. Once the students identify a landmark, they will then create a mathematical function to create a 2D representation of the landmark. Once we have the 3D printer, students will then be able to create a 3D model to really compare and view their work compared to the images of the landmark.

Providing students the opportunity to hold a representation of their thinking will be unlike any mathematical experience they have ever had.

In addition to this initial project, the 3D printer can be significantly utilized within my Geometry classes to help us study different types of geometric figures such as cubes, prisms, and pyramids. Often, students aren't able to visualize all of the characteristics and pieces of different geometric solids; however, using the 3D printer they will be able to see cross-sections and other important features of the figures.
