My Students

Some of my students come to me not being able to count to five or being able to identify that an elephant is bigger than a mouse. These are some of the first math skills young children need to learn more complete skills later in their schooling.

My students are some of the most amazing three year olds you will ever meet.

They live in our nation's capital and come from a community where the violence comes right to their doorstep and often right through their front door. Each student receives free breakfast, lunch, and end of the day snack to help nourish their mind and body. Several of them also stay for the extend day program where they are provided a supper as well. Often, this is the only food students have access to during the school week.

My Project

I am requesting Can Do! Math Activity Kits and Magnetic Math Boards. These materials will help my students to build their early math skills that will help them to think mathematically. Once students are introduced to the materials, they will be able to facilitate their own learning through independent use of the materials. They will be used first as a small group activity facilitated by the teacher and then as an independent activity for students will I work with another group of students on more specific instruction. The I Can Do! Math and Magnetic Math Board materials will teach them to count and identify numbers to 20; categorize items by likeness; copy, extend, and create patterns; and identify and describe shapes. These I Can Do! Math and Magnetic Math Board centers will help my students to learn these critical early math skills.

These materials will help to build my students early math skills.

With a strong mathematical foundation on which to build, my students can excel in math and eventually take advanced math classes in middle and high school, as well as become engineers, scientists, or anything else they dream.
