Math Word Walls For Vocabulary Retention

My students need a math word wall in order to better retain vocabulary and better prepare students for the new SAT.

My Students

A big obstacle in learning mathematics is understanding the vocabulary in order to begin solving a problem. Many students get frustrated because the don't know how to start on a problem because they have difficulty learning vocabulary.

My students belong to a rural regional school district across multiple towns.

The students along with their parents hold themselves to the highest of standards of learning. Our math department is very problem solving and discovery based and we have a lot of pride in what are students are able to accomplish.

My Project

In order to get students to use their higher order thinking skills to solve bigger math problems, they must master the vocabulary that comes with those problems. They must be able to effectively communicate the mathematics in problem solving teams. Therefore, we need Graffiti Word Wall Posters to help students visualize the vocabulary and get used to using the vocabulary on a regular basis.

This project will make a difference by improving mathematics instruction in my class.

Students will improve their mathematical vocabulary which will in turn improve their written and oral communication of mathematics. Students will become better problem solvers, collaborators, and test takers when they have a solid understanding of the foundations of mathematics vocabulary.
