My Project

The students that I work with have been deeply impacted by COVID-19 throughout the past 3 years. Specifically, students not having direct math instruction within the classroom setting has resulted in a decrease in knowledge within the development of number sense within our K-5 learning community. We have noticed that students have difficulty working with numbers within 1,000 as students are struggling to compose and decompose numbers. Research shows that it is imperative for our math students to have visual representations of numbers as a foundation for increased knowledge of fractions and decimals. The lack of in-person learning opportunities to use manipulatives and conversation between students with visually representing numbers presents itself as the root cause of my grant project.

With the funds from this grant, Math Wizards, it is my hope to provide manipulatives, tools, and engaging learning experiences to provide my students with opportunities to master the number sense math standards.

I will utilize these resources (ten frames, Unifix cubes, base ten pieces) as a means for developing student understanding of what numbers are and how to utilize place value concepts to perform the many mathematical operations required of math. Additionally, the games will allow for cooperative learning opportunities for students to practice the targeted skills that are being taught within my small group instruction. I believe that these resources will work to cultivate student agency and confidence for students. These math wizards will be able to showcase their mastery of place value concepts, multiplication strategies, and fractions to promote their efficacy in aiming high for their individual math goals!
