Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in a high need charter school in California. I have 20 very eager first graders who can't wait to learn their numbers. As a new charter school, this will be our 5th year we have very little supplies.
Since we have little supplies it can be very hard to teach our kids about counting, addition, and subtraction. I have very eager kids, who are bright, sharp, and curious. These math supplies will greatly pique their interest and install a life long love for math. Math is viewed by many students as tedious or laborious, I want to teach my students at an early age that math is not only important but fun!
My students need math manipulative such as Unifix cubes to help them learn number sense. They also need place value manipulatives that teach them about place value. First grade is a vital year to ground students with a strong foundation of mathematics. These resources will give our students a competitive edge with other students in the area. Our goal is to raise our school scores so that we may keep our charter school open.

Without you our students will not have the materials they need to succeed. This project will give students visual and kinesthetic modes to help enhance their learning. There is a huge disconnect with math in low income areas and I don't want that to be the case with my class. Who knows you may be helping out the next accountant, economist, stock broker, or CFO!
