Math with Words

My students need at least 4 different types of math books so each week they can read a book about math and understand the applications of the concepts being taught.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Math does not have to be frustrating and literature can make learning about math fun. Students don't want to be constantly tested, but performance/project-based learning can demonstrate mastery and eliminate stress. Writing in math is a critical thinking skill that allows students to demonstrate mastery.

My students are in grades 2-5.

They wear uniforms, and it is a public school. The socioeconomics in our school district is considered high poverty; hence, most students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Students in my classes are below grade level, and they receive specialized small group instruction. Many of the materials will be used with my reading, math, and tutoring groups to promote math literacy through project/performance-based learning.

My Project

The materials I am requesting are 12 math literacy books, project ideas, and assessment materials. The math literacy books are about fractions, decimals, and number sense (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). I tried to order at least 3 copies of 4 different math literacy books so I can group students monthly to create math projects. Some of the projects students can participate in are called Fishy Fractions, The Remainder, Fact Families, and Place Value. The project book will help me create new projects that will enhance the students learning, and they will periodically be used for assessing students. Students will be able to share their learning on the classroom blog and publish their projects in the classroom. In summary, students will use their multiple intelligences to demonstrate their learning using writing in math.

Trying to make math fun while students are learning can make the concept easier to learn and lessen frustration.

Math involves problem solving and learning skills to solving math computations. However, as students build their math foundation it is not just about knowing math facts. Students must be able to solve and explain math concepts to be successful. Project-based learning allows students to have an interactive and engaging way to demonstrate their learning.
