Fractions are very challenging as a math topic for my eighth graders. There are a wide variety of topic suggestions to make fractional concepts accessible to students, but none of them have really inspired my students. I would like to bring math and music together for my students through an interactive study of the recorder that integrates fractional concepts. Reading music requires that students know the fractional values of each note as compared to how many beats there are in the measure. The recorder is a low cost, not easily breakable, instrument that is easy to master. I would like to help teach my students how to read elementary music and play the music on their recorders. I hope that perhaps some students will even be able to write their own music, thereby truly mastering fractional math in music. I would like to buy a beginning music book and a recorder for each of my 40 eighth graders. Making this contribution would provide an invaluable asset to my students likelihood to connect to math in a lasting and inspiring way. Thank you!
