My 21 sweeties are readers, problem-solvers, illustrators, authors, and scientific thinkers. They love being with each other and miss each other terribly. We got a call one afternoon that we wouldn't be back for two weeks. That two weeks turned into almost three months, and we didn't get to say goodbye.
We did what we could to make sure everyone had what they needed during this pandemic, but nothing would be enough, and it took time to get everyone devices.
We pooled our resources to compile virtual work, sending through email, online apps and programs, but what we see the most is that our little friends just need us. When we meet with them online, they talk about how sad they are we can't get together, they miss their friends, and surprisingly-they all want to go back to school.
Many of our students are now running out of supplies or they are running through ink and paper like the office supply store, if they have printers. When we attempt to teach online they are scrambling for materials and it's not working well. They are stressed and worried.
My Project
Our students are using online platforms more than is recommended for regular screen time, just because there is nothing else to do or there is no other way to get content. Some families don't have printers to use the worksheets we send, and not everyone has availability to buy workbooks or other resources. Some are sharing computers so they have little access to any work. There is a lot of learning being lost and forgotten right now.
If my students could have these simple tools- cards, dice, tokens, and I can print and mail them game boards, they will be able to access fluency skills, new learning and practice off-line activities without having to print worksheets, and will gain the practice they would normally get in class.
This will also limit screen time to practice, which we know research says is not healthy for kids in large blocks of time. Games can be played solo, with a sibling or family member, so they will support every single one of my students.
Learning and teaching from home is working in some areas but there is so much in hind sight, that I wish I had done or knew, if we had had more time to prepare. Two days to make an entire virtual classroom was not nearly enough time and thinking at first we would be at this for only two weeks set us up for limited planning. Knowing that my students have the same tools, would allow me to make strong plans and learning opportunities for my students. They need all the support and structure we can provide in these strange times. Thank you!
