My Students
My students are PASSIONATE about learning! They have beautiful and creative minds; they just need a little help bringing it out. I want to give my students the ability to have the appropriate tools to help them learn STEM skills.
My students are full of life and energy and are always excited to learn.
They come from a disadvantaged school on the Windward side of Oahu. Our school is located in a predominately rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Micronesian ancestry. I have a very diverse class of 16 students from different cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds. They are motivated young students who struggle with learning due to the lack of accessible tools.
My Project
Sitting and listening to the teacher talk is not the most successful way kindergarten students learn. They need to be able to explore math concepts and strategies like numbers, operations, place value, and geometry through hands-on activities. Through exploration, kindergarten students can discover the strategies that work best for their learning style.
The toolboxes that are requested will be fundamental for my students as they engage in our school-wide Powerful Instructional Practice (PIP) of discourse in math.
As they explore these math tools, my students will be able to demonstrate productive struggle and discuss how they solved problems and teach each other different ways to solve each math problem.
Integrating hands-on activities with discourse during math will positively increase their engagement during whole-group and small-group instruction. Please help my students explore with toolboxes!
