Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Approximately 60 percent of the students at our urban Los Angeles school are African-American, about 30 percent are Latino, and the remaining 10 percent are a combination of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo-American, and others. Many students come from a multicultural heritage. The vast majority of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
My students will be learning remotely, at home, until next year.
The learning materials that I am here asking for will allow my students proper access to the curriculum I teach. If we give children challenging things to do, learning comes naturally. Kids are desperate to explore. They are interested in anything and everything and should have access to the hands-on learning materials they need. It is their human right. We live in a world where our youth are simply not provided enough quality resources to shine; this project will help make the dream of a bright future come true.
My Project
These blocks will help to give my students a rigorous early start in math. One inch square blocks are useful for learning numeracy as well as for learning geometry, and they are useful for helping young children discover the relationships that arise between number, shape, and pattern.
I just got back into my classroom to discover that I am substantially short on some essential math manipulatives.
Normally I teach in small groups where six or seven sets of each block is needed at a time. We share. But in the times of Covid, every student needs a set. Every student needs a set of each of the essential blocks I use to teach math, engineering, and design.
We are all learning from home this fall. Please give us these blocks as soon as possible. School officially starts next week!
