Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a small school of about 250 scholars. There is 1 class per grade. At our school, 90% of scholars qualify for free or reduced lunch. The attendance rate for the school is less than the city, and we work hard to encourage scholars to attend school every day.
At our school, we refer to our students as scholars.
We set high expectations for our scholars. We want them to become critical thinkers and problem solvers and to connect their learning in their present and future.
Myself, along with my co-teacher, teach math and science to fifty 4th and 5th-graders. They have a lot of energy and are eager to share. We are working to create a positive learning environment where all ideas are welcome and their value is appreciated. We encourage our scholars to work collaboratively as often as possible and to encourage the success of their peers.
My Project
Math in a Flash! Discovery Cans will provide scholars different access points to learning and reinforce new math concepts. For our 5th grade scholars, having these kits would provide students with a chance to address misconceptions from the previous year so they are better prepared to tackle grade-level concepts. Our 4th-grade scholars would benefit from the hands-on experience to discover connections between previous knowledge and new skills.
Providing scholars with new opportunities for hands-on and independent practice on their level will help them meet grade-level standards by differentiating instruction.
Differentiating instruction takes a lot of time plan. Having activities these activities would allow us to be more intentional with our instruction by meeting individual needs. This helps to close gaps in understanding of mathematical concepts. In addition, scholars build partnerships and social skills by working in cooperative groups.
Daily math stations are part of our classroom routine. Students engage in different learning activities to reinforce and practice math concepts. Adding the Folder Games and Number Talk center cards to our rotation would provide students with a fun way to model, explain and analyze math concepts while engaging in appropriate social interactions with peers.
