Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in my second year of teaching in a low-income neighborhood! Each day when I come into the classroom, I am so excited to get to make such an incredible impact on my students' lives. Our school is a Title I school with almost all of our population qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch! As a new teacher to first grade, there are a lot of expenses that come with setting up a productive and functional classroom! A lot of this money comes out of my own pocket as our district does not have the budget to support new teachers in this way.
I want my students to be able to reach their full potential!
This year is incredibly exciting for me as I have always hoped to get the opportunity to teach first grade! This new grade brings new challenges and learning experiences for both me and the students in my class. We get to experience first grade together, learning from one another and helping to push each other to reach our full potential for them as students and for me as their teacher.
My Project
This past year, our district adopted a new math curriculum! One of the wonderful parts of this curriculum is a list of literature that addresses the concepts being taught; however, these resources were not purchased for each classroom.
I know how helpful it can be for students who struggle with math to see the concepts being taught through a different medium.
I wish that as a student I had had the opportunity to explore math in a more visual and interactive setting. I have seen the power that interactive math read alouds can have on student interest with addition, subtraction, and more! I'm hoping that by getting to use these books as whole class read alouds, my students will gain a deeper understanding, want to pick up these books again and again, and learn to love math even more!
