Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I learned many things in math class when I was a child. Unfortunately, none of my math lessons included the following: What does a credit score mean and how can I make mine better? What are different investment options? How do I budget if I want to save for a house and how much cash will I need?
My school is a Title I school, meaning most students fall below a certain income level.
My kids face many obstacles everyday, including poverty and gang violence. They are reminded of this daily as they come to school, as the school is located adjacent to a jail and around the corner from the criminal court. These obstacles could easily distract any child from succeeding.
To make class more relevant, I would like to integrate more real life skills into math class. I would like kids to gain a better understanding of how much money is needed for them to live like they would like to live. They would have to research the salaries of the careers they are interested in, forecast the educational institutions they would like to attend, account for their children, and itemize any other expenses. We would also discuss credit and how access to credit (or lack thereof) can impact a monthly budget.
My Project
I am requesting basic materials such as pencils, erasers, pencil sharpener, and batteries. Additionally, we would need batteries for our graphing calculators and a multimedia receiver to write programs that will help us to model and predict financial scenarios.
Understanding real life applications for math increases student engagement and interest in math. Students are encouraged to explore all levels of math and are being prepared to pursue advanced regent’s diplomas so that they will have access to the most competitive colleges.
All of my students are encouraged to go to college, and these materials will help to deliver a college preparatory curriculum in that we will be better able to focus on higher order thinking skills (analyzing, information synthesis, etc.). Additionally, students will be better prepared for college in that I can better promote strong math, financial planning, and technology skills that will make them more competitive in the workforce.
In addition to preparing my students for life, this project aims to better prepare my students to be admitted into AND graduate from highly selective colleges.
It is imperative that students are provided with learning opportunities that are engaging and involve real world applications. This project will help us to provide a strong, technology based math curriculum. Thank you for inciting change by believing in and actively supporting our students!
