This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The rigor in mathematics increased with the Common Core Standards. A key shift in the math common core is an equal emphasis in conceptual understating, procedure skills, and fluency.
Kindergarten students are very concrete thinkers and therefore need a variety of manipulatives to develop conceptual understanding.
Math is one of my students favorite subjects. They love exploring numbers. One of their favorite math activities is their math journal. They enjoy working out the math problems and explaining their thinking to the rest of the class.
My Project
Math manipulative are an essential part of our math lesson. The ones that I have requested are the ones we still need to help with some key concepts. These manipulative will be used to teach in small groups and then made accessible to students to use in centers or on an as needed basis to help them with practice to further develop their concept understanding.
Now more than ever we need critical thinkers and its never too late to begin teaching children to think critically.
Math is center stage in this process. Through math problems using real life situations, it teaches students to problem solve and math manipulative are perfect to aide in this process.
