Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach a diverse population of students, including honors, special education, and English language learners from many different cultural backgrounds and educational needs. We are a Title I school, meaning students come from lower socio-economic circumstances. I teach mathematics to three sixth-grade classes yearly, with thirty students in each class. My students are located mainly in Queens, NY's Elmhurst and Corona areas.
I formed an after-school math support group for my sixth-grade students.
As a math teacher for sixth graders, I have noticed that some students are timid and will not ask for help and yet need help.
Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, or computations: it is about understanding how to make math real in their lives.
My math support group is after-school and we meet to discuss what they have learned or not learned in their class that day. Also, we deal with the basics of mathematics and depending on the topic, how they can use it in their everyday lives. We work in small groups and at times have great class discussions rather than just putting pencil to paper.
As a teacher, heck as a father. I know by the end of the day kids are exhausted and the last thing they want to do is more work, especially math. This is a service provided free to my students and I know some of them do not want to be there. If I can provide my kids with a snack and water, they will come to my after-school math class and it will give them the energy to work. I find it funny how providing treats and candy (sugar-free) makes kids work harder and hearing their laughter is wonderful.
