Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

It's no secret that encouraging words can help slowly build students' confidence in their mathematical thinking and lead to more participation in class. I'm a second year math teacher and all of my students have something great to offer. I'd like to help students feel seen by posting exemplar student work on the whiteboard/walls in my classroom. I'd also like to be able to give students motivational stamps on completed assignments and exemplar work! Thus the magnets will help me to post student work, and the stamps will help me to lift students up.

Furthermore, since we don't have a full class set of calculators or scissors, students have to share during tests and classroom activities.

Therefore, I've requested 16 more calculators and 12 more scissors so that each student can have their own during class.

Lastly, one thing that really motivates the students are Jolly Ranchers. It might sound silly to an adult, but these students will absolutely work harder for these little candies. I like to give them to students who are on task and start the warm-up right away when class starts. I also give them to brave students who ask questions during the lesson, for general participation, and when tables compete to answer math questions.

I tried to instill in them that it's not about being right or wrong but just having the motivation or desire to learn more than what you knew when you stepped into class.
