My Students
From the moment the first bell rings, I am greeted in my Zoom Room with a class full of faces greeting me with "Good morning". How strange it is to conduct class these days online.
My enthusiasm spills over at the sound of learning and academic discussions that goes on while my arms flap about wildly like a conductor orchestrating his next masterpiece.
As a 6th grade math teacher I am tasked with creating digital lessons that engage and encourage their curiosity.
We are a Title I school with a large percentage of my students being Spanish speakers (75%). My student population comes from all walks of life; many of which are seeking a nurturing environment, supportive adults and a welcome distraction for a few hours at school. I am looking to give back to a community where these scholars will one day serve as future leaders and role models for the next generation.
My Project
The document camera that I am requesting for my students will help me bring real life examples to their homes during distance learning. On my desk, I will be able to live stream camera feed of manipulatives, models and diagrams to help students make sense of different math topics. Currently, my students have seen me do my best diagramming with a tablet and a digital whiteboard. I'm grateful that I can communicate by drawing examples digitally, but it can be quite cumbersome when editing online as opposed to writing with a colored pen or pencil. Having done distance learning for half the school year now, I wished I was able to accomplish more with them as I had done when they were in class. Wouldn't it have been great to see real manipulatives that I can demonstrate with? I think so.
