My Students

Do you remember the excitement of art & music classes when you were in school? My students are longing for activities that allow them to be creative, but we lack the supplies. I want to bring art and music into my classroom and use them to teach math, science, and social studies

We are a small school in rural Florida.

My classes include many students for whom English is their second language. My students love hands-on activities - the messier, the better! I teach in a departmentalized 4th grade and try to do projects and find enough materials to get every child involved. I am amazed at the level and complexity of the conversations they have during these activities and try to do as many projects as possible in order to draw out those conversations.

My Project

I want my students to create pottery like the people native to our area. The project will involve students searching nature for items to incorporate into the pottery and collaborating together to design a set that represents a tribe. They will then analyze the pottery of the other groups and determine which tribe is represented. Many children are tactile learners, so I'll also create a set to be smashed, buried, excavated, and analyzed so they can experience how real archaeologists learn about ancient cultures. I will excite my visual learners by using the markers to have students draw posters using symmetry and tessellations and to color code multistep problems. Listening to music from the Civil War era & Gustav Holst's musical composition, "The Planets," is miserable on our current speaker. When asked to draw what they imagine Holst is trying to convey through the piece he wrote for Jupiter, I want the drawings to be detailed about the planet and as big and vibrant as the music.

Our world involves so much more than paper, pencils, and textbooks and our students' education should reflect that.

By providing opportunities for my students to work together and to analyze each other's work, I hope to open doors to them and expand their thinking in a way that they never imagined possible.
