This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is home to two classes of 20 fifth graders, each with a big heart filled with curiosity and an enthusiastic drive to learn more. I know this because I taught this group of students during the 2016-2017 school year when they were third graders! My students are in a fifth-grade Math and Science classroom at a Title I school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of upper NYC. Ninety-four percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and 30% are English language learners. Like most children, my students love having hands-on experiences and I want ALL of my students to be able to have access to their own personal learning needs!
Inspiring my students to learn with a hands-on, engaging environment is the mission in the classroom.
At the end of the year, I want my students to say, "This was the best year in math, ever!" My students deserve the best math education I can give them and I desire to be able to provide a mathematical education that will encourage my students to reach for the stars!
My Project
My students come in most days and work with paper and pencil. What a welcome change it will be for group time to include a Microsoft Surface Pro. Students will be able to watch videos of skills they struggle with, play vocabulary games and work on math fluency skills. In group time, they can watch a video and discuss with the group a focus standard. This will be a great tool for integrating the standards and increasing our vocabulary acquisition with collaboration around the Microsoft Surface Pro.
The Surface Pro will have a significant impact on the lives of my students as they will not only be further engaged academically, but will also be an important tool for engaging students in meaningful, real world work.
In addition, the surface will allow the teacher to be mobile in the classroom while teaching. Instead of being stuck at the front of the room writing on a whiteboard, the teacher will be able to interact with the students around the classroom in their groups and yet be able to show examples to the whole class on the projector while writing on the Surface. Students will thus be better engaged in the learning going on and will be able to pay better attention throughout the entire class period.
I know this interaction will make a world of difference for each of them as I will get the opportunity to personalize their learning.
It would mean so much to my students, as we would LOVE to have endless resources at our fingertips! It is important for students to become digital citizens that will give them more opportunities later in life. Your help and donation will make a difference in each one of their lives!
