Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 9th grade math in an inner city community. My kids face many obstacles everyday, including poverty and gang violence. They are reminded of this daily as they come to school, as the school is located adjacent to a jail and around the corner from the criminal court. Given all that the kids have to overcome on a daily basis, it is nice to see them so excited about learning a subject that will truly make them competitive in today’s technological age.

My students worked so hard last year that they were able to take one of their high school exams in the 8th grade. This year as 9th graders, they will be learning 10th grade curriculum. Ultimately, they are aiming to receive advanced Regent’s diplomas so that they can be admitted into and be successful in highly selective colleges. In order to help them achieve their ultimate goal of college admission, we would like to integrate as much technology into the class as possible. We currently are learning to use the TI-84 graphing calculator. This learning process is not going as smoothly as possible, as students have no way of knowing what keys the teacher is pressing unless I state the keys. This is not the optimal way of learning for visual learners and learners that require more processing time.

A great solution to this would be to use the TI Smart-view software. This software displays the keystrokes as they are being pressed. This way, all students can be included in the learning without feeling badly if they fall a bit behind. Additionally, it would be great if each student could have a white board to share his or her work with the entire class. This would help me to verify who was using the graphing calculator correctly as well.

All of my students are encouraged to go to college. These materials will help to prepare them for college in that I can better promote strong math skills and study habits. What is unique about this group of students in particular is that they have taken it upon themselves to make a pact as a class to strive for advanced regents diplomas for the entire class. This will give them access to highly competitive colleges. In order to support them in this goal, I aim to provide them with materials comparable to those found in more affluent schools. I always tell them that if they choose to put in the effort, the community will choose to support them in their endeavor. As members of your community, we very much welcome and appreciate your support!
