This will be my first year as a teacher. I am teaching math to a wonderful bunch of third-grade kiddos. My students attend a Title I school in a rural district, and the majority of our school receives free or reduced lunches.
My students experienced part of their early adolescence during the COVID-19 times, so many of them have not had consistent learning environments.
Although these children grew up in some very untraditional times, my students still have an abundant amount of curiosity when it comes to their learning. They are creative, compassionate, and have a desire to obtain more knowledge. They are hardworking children that deserve the best education in the best learning environment.
My school is very supportive of hands-on learning components, and our students love to actively participate when doing such. Research has proven that the use of manipulatives and interactive learning can increase students' attentiveness.
I will use these math manipulatives to keep my students engaged while learning daily skills through math lessons. The fraction stacking cubes will be used to introduce students to how fractions work and relate to each other through group work. My class sizes are around 25 per class, so by having 5 sets of fraction cubes, I will be able to allow students to work in small group environments. Every student has different learning styles, so I will use the posters and class schedules for my visual learners.
My goal is to not only encourage my students to do math but to love to do math. By creating a safe and encouraging learning environment with the use of manipulatives and posters, I will have a better opportunity to achieve that goal and provide my students with the quality education that they deserve.
