This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The items in this project are going to be helpful for my high school math students to participate in class. At the end of every school year, I think about what changes I want to make in order for next year to be even better. I spent time this year demonstrating how to take useful notes in math. I used binders, guided notes, sticky notes, highlighters, notebook dividers, etc. so that students could take pride in this important concept. After more than 31 years as an educator, I continue to look for ways to improve student learning, subject retention, and class participation.

My students are noticeably more engaged when they receive instant gratification and feedback.

I am requesting tools that I feel helps create an environment where this can occur. The dry-erase markers and whiteboards are fun for students to write on. I have used these for many years and they're great! However, after using them so much, many need to be replaced due to wear and tear. These individual boards provide students the opportunity to demonstrate what they are working on, hold them up for me to see while perhaps working with others, and provide feedback. They are also awesome for answering a "Math Question of the Day". Rewarding those students that participate in class, is a great way to keep students on task, help retain the important objectives, and persevere. Students love to earn prizes!

I was fortunate in getting a project funded last year and my students expressed their gratitude in understanding the importance of effective note-taking skills and organization. Each student had a binder to use for the year. Unfortunately, some binders are now in poor shape and I am hoping to get notebooks and pencils for those that can't get them on their own..
