Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in Los Angeles. Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent Latino, and the remaining 10 percent a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver.
It is my goal to develop problem solving strategies in the minds of my students so that they will be able to attack math without fear, but with relish - a mental condition that is obviously beneficial in areas of life outside of mathematics.
This year I have introduced my students to a few strategy games, such as a kids version of the Chinese game of Go, the game of Mancala, the game of Y, Three Mens' Morris, and some others, and I would like to give them more opportunities to develop their strategic thinking - but I need the supplies.
Strategic thinking is important for mathematics for the obvious reason that mathematical problems lend themselves to a variety of solutions.
All of the materials in this selection are useful for exploring math concepts taught in first grade. Cuisinaire rods, for example, are useful for teaching kids addition, subtraction, fractions, and geometry. And they are fun for the children to use.
It is always a great pleasure for me to see students engaged in lessons that have real meaning for them. In my classroom, math is always related to actions and events in the real world. The supplies that you provide will form an important part of the meaningful math curriculum that I strive to deliver. Rest assured: your donation will make a real difference.
