Our school is a kindergarten through 8th grade school in the Fairmount area of Philadelphia. I teach Math Enrichment (an extra math block) to students in grades k-8 to enhance their math ability. This enrichment program is designed to reinforce math skills and help prepare my students as a lifelong learners. We focus on math facts, problem solving, and fluency skills at each child’s individual level. My goal is to make math relevant and engaging by building confidence through games and activities.
My students have many different mathematical strengths and weaknesses and would love to have more materials to help support their learning!
The students love coming to school each day and are eager to explain their mathematical thinking.
My Project
The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and competency in authentic, meaningful math work. In addition to necessary classroom supplies (pencils, paper, scissors, dry-erase markers, printer ink cartridges, laminating sheets), I am also requesting many math manipulatives and games to help foster students understanding of mathematics. Some manipulatives and games I am requesting are play money, cash register, dominoes, counting bears, pattern blocks, ten frame counters, multiplication/division flash cards, addition/subtraction game, number lines, math equivalency puzzles, and base ten blocks. Manipulatives allow students to construct their own cognitive models for abstract mathematical ideas. In addition, manipulatives provide an advantage of engaging students and increasing both interest in and enjoyment of mathematics.
I have also requested three comfy floor seats to give my students flexible seating options.
Flexible seating allows students to find comfortable positions to learn in the classroom. Not all students learn best by sitting at a chair at their desk. All of these materials will help foster my students love for mathematics.
