My Students
In our classroom, the children rise to the challenge of meeting and exceeding the rigorous demands of the curriculum. Each day the students strive to become fluent readers, capable writers, and develop a sense of science that provides understanding. Learning is fun, and smiles are abundant in our class!
Since our school is Title 1, our goal for each student is for them to become successful scientist and readers in school and life.
A strong foundation will provide the stepping stone they need to excel and have opportunities to succeed. Most of my students live in financially assisted housing and receive free lunch. Although they are poor financially, they are rich in heart! The entire school strives to nurture the students with love and knowledge. High expectations are producing results. Students in our school know that education is the key to becoming productive members of society.
My Project
Students need materials at home that provide opportunity for hands-on learning. The materials provided by this project will be put into “take home bags” to reinforce Math skills introduced in class. Parents will be empowered to help them with these different math skill, and will be able to help their child learn at home. A night of frustrating homework will be transformed into family fun!
Research proves that early learners learn best through hands on learning experiences.
These materials will provide concrete opportunities that can later evolve into abstract thinking. The different concepts taught throughout the year based off the Louisiana Common Core State Standards are addressed in these take home bags. Each item placed in the bags are aligned with the standards. For instance, place value concepts are covered using the base 10 kits by building numbers and exploring the 10s place. Learning about coin value will be exciting using magnetic coins on the refrigerator. The folder games provided will provide endless opportunities to cover many standards throughout the year, and enhance parental involvement with their child’s education. Math fluency and subitizing practice can be practiced at home using the number bonds and pens. Most importantly various learning styles are addressed with the wide array of manipulatives and games that teach to the standards. Home learning will no longer be an anxiety filled task, but a fun opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their child and help them learn. This new and exciting home-school connection will help close learning gaps in Math!
Students in my classroom have several opportunities a month to participate in STEM activities. Math is a cornerstone in Science and Engineering mastery. My hope is that all students will be confident STEM learners and critical thinkers. By providing Math mastery opportunities, the students will excel in many areas of learning……most importantly STEM!
