it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
HELP--we need Math Centers!! My students need some hands-on activities in order to master mathematics concepts. I teach 3rd grade in a high-poverty, multi-cultural school in Oklahoma.
Many of the Mathematics concepts in the 3rd grade curriculum are more abstract than basic skills, such as adding and subtracting. My students are in need of hands-on learning materials to help their understanding of math topics, which include: measurement, time, problem solving, number sense, fractions, algebraic thinking, money, and geometry. We need these materials to supplement our current curriculum materials, which do not include many hands-on activities.
I am requesting a learning station set in the areas of measurement, time, problem solving, number sense, fractions, algebraic thinking, money, and geometry. I am also requesting a set of 10 place value boards which students can manipulate. I requesting a set of folding geometric shapes with which students can create 3-dimensional shapes and actually see and touch the vertices, edges, and faces of each shape. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills will be enhanced through the playing of board games, which I have requested.
My students are in dire need of extra support in the area of mathematics instruction. The 3rd graders in my class last year were unsuccessful in the area of mathematics, when given the annual state test. In order for this not to happen again, I feel the need to provide my students with supplemental materials to enhance the effectiveness of my instruction. The school I teach at does not have funds available for these materials which will enhance the learning of all of my students. As a teacher, I cannot afford to purchase these items on my own; therefore, I am respectfully asking that donors will fund these much needed materials.
