Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in high school grades 10 -12 grade in math and English classes in the Los Angeles area. They have learning challenges but work really hard to meet the standards of the curriculum. They have been struggling since the close of school due to the stress of virtual learning, but also have had many losses. Parents, grandparents, and siblings have been sick with COVID or died from it. Some of them contracted COVID themselves and struggled to catch up in school when they were too sick to work.

My Project

Math Manipulatives help take math ideas that can seem abstract or intangible become tangible. Once a math idea becomes something a student can actually touch and manipulate, many times students are able to make life-long connections to math, which can take can them from basic math skills into higher-level mathematical thinking. Depending on a student's learning style just using the textbook may make them struggle because they do not have a concrete understanding. Another important product of using math manipulatives is that it can help build students’ confidence in their understanding of mathematical ideas since they can prove their theories with tangible things.
