My students need magnetic dry erase boards, markers, magnetic numbers and counters and other things they can manipulate to enhance their understanding of math concepts.

My Students
My class is a self-contained class for young students with Autism. My students have developmental delays and communication deficits. Our curriculum is the standard curriculum for regular education students and can be very frustrating for my students.
Due to their communication limitations, students with Autism need concrete and hands-on learning opportunities.
They have deficits in receptive as well as expressive communication. They learn by seeing and doing. They also need kinesthetic or “hands-on” opportunities to show their understanding of what they have learned.
My Project
The magnets and blocks will provide hands-on opportunities for my students to learn and express their understanding of math concepts such as adding to, taking away and making 10. Research has shown that students, especially students with autism, learn better when they are taught using multiple modalities. In addition, they benefit from being able to show their knowledge in various ways. The locks and puzzle will be a fun way for them to show what they know. The magnetic ten frames and blocks will provide opportunities for additional understanding and generalization of knowledge.
The supplies will appeal to visual and kinesthetic modalities for learning and expression.
The magnets provide additional sensory input that will enhance their learning experience.
In addition to communication and developmental delays, many of my students have poor fine motor coordination and strength. The dry erase boards and markers will allow them to write without the pressure required for traditional writing materials.
