Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All of my students work very hard and want to achieve mastery. However, many students struggle in mathematics. As a first year teacher I don't have many math manuplatives for them to use in the classroom. Often, the only way I can demonstrate something is through words or pictures.
In my school there are about 120 students in the sixth grade.
Those 120 students are split into 4 classes of 30 students. Two classes are made up of students who scored highly on their math achievement test. I am responsible for teaching the other two classes, the 60 students who struggle in math.
My school is located in a small farming town near the U.S./Mexico border. The demographics for my school are typical for this area. The students are low academically, but everyone works very hard.
My Project
These resources will be around the room and available to all students. Whenever I introduce a new concept we will be able to have hands-on practice with the new concept. The students will then finally have an understanding of mathematics beyond abstract formulas. When we encounter fractions, students will be able to have hands-on practice with fraction circles. When we get to geometry, they will be able to hold the shapes in their hands with Geometric Solids. When we do ratios, the students will get to use Cuisinart rods to represent the ratios.
My students work incredibly hard to understand mathematics.
Unfortunately, math is not something that comes easily for them. These students desperately need different ways to engage with math in a hands-on way. As a first year teacher I don't have these resources to make that a possibility. These students need a firm grasp on mathematics to not be left behind as they continue to move up through school. These math manipulatives will give them the best possible chance of catching up in math.
