My students need math manipulatives such as pattern blocks, measuring tapes, multiplication wrap-ups, a scale, and base ten blocks.

My Students
This year my class numbers have nearly doubled from last year. Our school boundaries were realigned, so we now have a more balanced population with a number of new ESL students. I love the change and the diversity. However, I am in desperate need of additional math supplies.
I teach third grade in a small, rural school.
With the realignment of our school boundaries, we have received about fifty new students. My class size has doubled over the past year. Unfortunately most of my new students are at risk and need instruction that gives them the opportunity to work with math materials to cement the concepts that I am teaching. I have taught for many years, so I have a variety of materials to make my lessons effective. However, with the addition of so many new students, I don't have enough to allow students to work in small groups to explore math concepts.
My Project
My math instruction involves many hands-on activities for students. It is extremely challenging not to be able to have enough materials to make this possible. For example, I do not have enough base ten blocks to allow student partners to explore the concepts in our curriculum. We were already working in pairs, so now I just have to use overhead examples. It just isn't the same as allowing the students to manipulate the materials.
I'm a real advocate of students learning their facts. It is frustrating not to be able to supply them with multiplication wrap-ups that I normally use to help them practice their multiplication facts.
I have a large number of students that struggle in math this year. With funding cuts, I also have very little help from teacher assistants. The materials that I am requesting will be most beneficial to those students that require more help with math and need more hands-on activities. I am excited at the prospects of being better able to help these students.
Your funding of this project will have a great impact on my students, not only this year, but in years to come.
As each child works with the materials provided by you, their understanding of critical math concepts will grow. The importance of helping students reach their full potential cannot be measured. Thank you for your help in making my goal of providing the best instruction for my students a reality.
