Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a Title I school and many of the children come from homes where English is their second language. We have over 100 students for fourth grade with only four teachers and one main English Language Teacher that rotates into each classroom. With that many students needing extra English Language support, having visuals, leveled readers, math manipulatives and providing hands-on activities is a necessity. My students come to school everyday with the hopes that they will better their lives and their families with education and the willingness and desire to do more. We are in the inner city of Kansas City with a population that is 95 percent English Language Learners as well as 100 percent free lunch. I would love to add more diversity and engagement through meaningful activities. I need more in my classroom! I would love to add hands-on games, manipulatives, and center activities to engage all students and make sure they will end up being lifelong learners. My students come in every day with a positive attitude and ready to take on the day. We are more like a family than just students and teacher.
My Project
These math and literacy materials will help differentiate instruction in the classroom. The leveled readers will ensure that students at various reading levels will be able to comprehend and understand key comprehension skills such as inferencing, determining main idea and details, using context clues, etc. while reading text that they can decode and read fluently. These skills are essential in the development of successful readers. The scripted readers will be beneficial to my English Language Learners as well as those below grade level by having them gain fluency while building background knowledge in a fun and engaging way! The I Can games and Visualize It Cards will help students build fluency with their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Students need an automaticity with their facts to make solving more complex problems easier. Once they master the facts using those components, we can move into solving and mastering multi-step word problems, which is another item listed in this project. Problem solving skills grow in difficulty as the years progress so really building a strong sense of how to tackle these problems now, will ensure future success in later years. Included also in this project is a small group instructional kit for guiding reading. It includes lessons to make sure crucial key reading skills are all covered throughout the year. These materials would mean the world to my students. They love playing games while learning new skills and content. It’s a memorable way to spend the day especially when some of my students may not have much to look forward to once they head home for the day.
