My Students
Students don't always remember everything that they have learned in school, but they do remember the experiences they have had.
My students are fifth graders in a low income, semi-rural area.
We currently have 17 classroom teachers, and about 26 students in each class. Our students are very eager and interested in learning. However, we do not have all the necessary math manipulatives in order to meet the needs of all students in our school. We have been very fortunate to receive many new math materials and manipulatives this school year, but we still need more. Every student should have access to these materials daily.
My Project
With Common Core quickly approaching, we need to give our students a variety of learning opportunities. These math manipulatives will be used in everyday instruction to introduce topics, complete high-cognitive demand tasks, and as visual models for students to return to as needed. Students will be collaborating more with their peers.
We need Fraction Circles, Fraction and Decimal Tiles, and Cuisenaire Rods to aid in hands-on learning activities. These materials will help provide for differentiated instruction, which will allow more students to reach their full math potential. These math manipulatives will allow students to make a stronger connections with the math concepts. This will increase overall understanding, and provide for retention of the material.
With your help, my students will have these materials available in their own classroom each and everyday.
They will be able to not only use the manipulatives during math instruction, but also return to then as needed. They will be successful in math, and have a great learning experience!
