Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a New York City Kindergarten public school teacher. My classroom is in need of some math manipulatives. The program we use provides us with manipulatives for the lessons associated with the program. To further reinforce the lessons, I like to have enough manipulatives to have a math centers area as a way for the children to choose an acticity to do during their center time. However, I do not have enough manipulatives for students to use during center time. My students learn best when they have hands-on activities. Once I introduce the lesson, they go back and "play" with manipulatives to try and understand the concept. They are delighted when they use pattern blocks. They play with them, build things and trace them to make pictures. It would be wonderful to use task cards so that they can match the shapes and make designs with the pattern blocks as an extension activity when they have center time. Also, kindergarten children should be exposed to attribute blocks. There are no attribute blocks in my classroom. I have been asking for them but I have not been able to acquire any from the school. When I do lessons that require the blocks, I have to borrow them from a fellow teacher and then give them back after the lesson. I cannot leave them in my math centers area for children to explore during center time. Finally, the children have a wonderful time learning how to count, do patterns, sort and graph using manipulatives. They stay on task and focused when they have activity mats to guide their activity. They are able to explore these concepts in a concrete way when they use manipulatives that they like.
