My Students
This year I have 22 first graders in my class. They are eager to learn and are happy little students. They love to work hard! I work hard to make sure they get their hands on concrete objects that enhance their learning.
My Project
Hands-on math experiences are so important for young learners (and all of us)! Acting out the action of addition, subtraction, and comparing and modeling our place value system are some of the most important activities 1st graders can experience. With the base 10 snap blocks, my students will come to understand the different place values by actually modeling them. With the dual number lines, we will explore how you can use the number 10 as a benchmark for adding and subtracting numbers. And with the dry erase board and pockets we will meet in small groups to record our discoveries with the manipulatives.
Manipulatives belong in the hands of the students!
Rather than showing my students math concepts through demonstration, I want them to discover those math concepts themselves through manipulation of concrete objects. With the COVID-19 outbreak this year restricting the sharing of materials, I want to make sure my students each have enough manipulatives in their hands. For that reason, I am submitting this grant proposal.
Students for 10+ years to come will be able to use all these materials again and again, except for the dry erase pockets, which generally only last 1-2 years.
