Math Manipulatives for Young Minds

Help me give my students magnetic dry erase boards, a ten-frames set, and other math manipulatives to help them develop a stronger understanding of larger numbers.

My Students

All of my students love learning but their ability levels vary greatly. I have a class of 20 with 4 students who are in special education. Their diverse backgrounds include some with regular exposure to books and others with little to no "out of the classroom" experience. The majority of my students have a challenging and difficult home life. The school is a Title I school that has over 90% of the population is low income. We also have a large foster care population.

The school is a public school in an urban community.

Recently, the school district suffered a deficit and all of its schools suffered a financial loss including loss of vital staff members and lack of school supplies. Most of the students only come to school supplied with pencils, crayons, and a few composition books that will need to be replenished by mid-year.

My Project

Math manipulatives make learning fun! Tactile learning builds a more personal understanding of math concepts. Manipulatives help construct an understanding of ideas. Manipulatives also help students test their reasoning.

Second-grade math starts with adding numbers up to 20.

The best strategy to teach this is counting on a ten frame. My students can practice grouping, adding, and skip counting with these ten frames. Second grade is when students begin to add double-digit numbers. By being able to use the write and wipe hundreds charts, my students will be able to use the patterns on the hundreds chart to visually see how to add two addends.
