My students need hands-on manipulative kits to generate interest and develop real-life connects to math concepts such as elapsed time, area/perimeter, and fractions. With these kits, my small group math sessions will come to life!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching in a low-income community comes with its challenges, but my students work though the tough times to come out on top! My students are amazing! They come from such diverse backgrounds, but come together to be one learning community. They are helpful, loving, and enthusiastic about learning. My students come from working-class families who put forth as much effort as they can when it comes to their children's education. However, this is not always enough for our classroom to have all we need for success.
Third grade is a growing year.
The students in my class have a wide range of abilities, and it is my job to help bridge the gap between the cans and the can nots. We work together, as a community, to build each other up, and not leave anyone behind. We are all in this together!!
My Project
The third graders in my class are learning a variety of concepts that require them to think both inside and out of the box. Literally speaking, they are learning how to compute the areas and perimeters of regular, and irregular shapes. Even some adults struggle with such concepts. When I can allow the students to recreate a visual for these types of problems, the purpose seems much more real to them.
Math is real-life, and all children should be allowed to view it that way.
Instead of just learning how to solve problems, I want my students to understand why we need certain types of math concepts.
Many times the more complicated concepts in Math are the ones that require the most time with manipulatives and hands-on learning. With each of the kits; elapsed time, area/perimeter, fractions, etc. my students will it only be able to learn these standards, but also practice them, once we have move onto another topic. Practice makes better, and what better way to practice then with active learning.
