My students are every teacher's dream! It's been difficult to get them to smile at Zoom meetings because their families have been adversely and personally impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. They live in the inner cities of Boston, MA, and are learning remotely at home. Many of my students have experienced the loss of a family member from complications of COVID-19. The trauma alone makes it difficult for them to engage in Zoom Meetings during math. I know that they would benefit from having manipulated to use when solving problems. It would make them smile again! They come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds - socially, economically, and ethnically. Some of my students exceed academic expectations, while others struggle immensely. The things they all have in common are grit, perseverance, and stamina. They are not afraid of difficult tasks! They are the BEST and the BRIGHTEST! They attend to every task I assign with fidelity, by using the collective knowledge of the entire class.
They are discovering the leader within themselves.
I create a safe learning environment where they are nurtured and cultivated. They have the perfect balance of warmth and intelligence, kindness, and grace. They are learners!
These manipulatives will continue to enhance the development of new concepts while learning from home. My students' homes are now their classroom, and I want to make sure they have everything they need to facilitate learning. Every student needs a set of manipulatives for home. I receive video conferences from students and families up to 10 pm seeking help with math problems. I know if they had the right manipulatives at home, it would help them understand the concepts more readily. All of these manipulatives (money, base 10 blocks, clocks) have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them over the past 7 weeks of remote learning by video, and they constantly ask me if they can go back to the school building to pick up their manipulates. My students will use math manipulatives to further their knowledge of mathematical concepts.
With these new manipulatives, my students will be able to reach develop concepts and reach mastery.
My students already have shown an astonishing interest in math, and this project will only help enrich their experiences.
