Math Manipulatives for Hands on Learners!

My students need headphones for their computerized math program which we use every day. The Fraction game and markers will be used for hands on fraction lessons.

My Students

Here on the Standing Rock Reservation we get incredibly bright, resilient students who are eager to work towards a bright future. Math can be especially challenging to many, but as our stamina increases, so does the need for more classroom items that students can use for hands on activities!

Most of the 5th graders in math class are kinesthetic learners, and need to use objects that can be touched, rearranged, ordered, colored, etc.

to help them visualize and understand concepts in math. Our schools enrollment has increased significantly this year, especially for the 5th grade. Last school year we had 30, 5th grade students, however this year we are teaching 46 which means we are in need of some extra classroom supplies!

My Project

The materials we are hoping for from this project are very simple and basic, however will increase student engagement resulting in growth. Every Thursday we run 4 different stations where students choose which skill they would like to put to use that they've been learning about. The Fractions board game will be a fun, interactive way to apply their knowledge in a fun, competitive setting. The Markers will be use for shading in fraction pictures or dividing and coloring objects. We currently only have colored pencils and they do not transfer onto surfaces other than paper. The headphone are a necessity for our classroom because they will accompany the interactive math program students work on every day that is found on the computer. Currently they need to have the volume off, but some questions require listening skills, which is where the headphones come in.

Kinesthetic learners need tangible items that they can physically hold in order to make a connection between the lesson and how it makes sense in their own mind.

Having just a few essential items can make a drastic difference in the learning outcomes for students who benefit from hands on education!
