Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Although the middle school where I teach is between two larger cities, it is very secluded and sheltered. In fact, a great majority of the students have not ventured out of their area. We are a Title I School and serve free breakfast and free lunch to all students who attend. A large majority of the students are English Language Learners (ELLs) and are either first or second generation Americans who face hardships on a daily basis.

Hands-on learning manipulatives are an important part to any learner's understanding.

When you offer hands-on learning, all students - no matter their language proficiency levels or math proficiency levels - are able to learn.

My Project

This math kit will enable all students - no matter their language level or math level - to have hands on experience with math. Students will work in flexible seating arrangements using these materials. They will be allowed to explore all of the different math concepts as we learn them. This kit will enable them have multiple ways to learn new concepts. When they are able to use their hands, they can make new connections.

When students are able to see real world connections and hold items in their hands, they can make math connections.

This kit is an alternative to traditional skills practice and creates a safe learning environment.
