My Project

Our school district's i-Ready Common Core Mathematics creates a robust and rich classroom environment where students at all levels can become active, real-world problem solvers. Our goal is to support students to become strong, independent mathematical thinkers. The program uses the instructional routine of Try-Discuss-Connect. During the Try It- portion of our discourse-driven curriculum students actively engage in their learning with the use of manipulates. This model gives students an opportunity to build strong mathematical habits. During the Try It routine, math manipulatives support engagement in hands-on math activities and exploration of mathematical concepts. Students use a variety of manipulatives to build concrete representations that help them conceptualize abstract and complex mathematical ideas providing a platform for collaboration and discussion, while offering clarity of strategies and concepts. Students require access using the sturdy and tear-resistant zipper pouches for a variety of manipulatives to construct their own cognitive models before engaging in discourse with their peers. The common language manipulatives provide, enhances communication not only between peers but supports students in expressing their thought processes to their teachers. The use of manipulatives truly is the foundational base and launch into mathematical thinking.
