This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher at a low-income school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they show up every day with a positive attitude towards learning. I am looking to provide as many learning opportunities for my students that I can during their time with me and seeing their excitement as they learn new things through their readings in Scholastic magazine. Without these resources in the classroom, many students would never know the world that surrounds them.
My Project
Hands-on learning is one of the most impactful strategies a teacher can use when teaching students a new concept because it helps the students connect their knew knowledge to the real world. In the math classroom, this requires many manipulatives in order to put meaning behind the learning. With these materials, we will be able to create many centers/games for students to help keep them engaged and collaborating with their peers. All of these manipulatives can be used for many different math concepts so they will be used frequently in the classroom. Fifth graders spend a large portion of their year learning about the connection between fractions and decimals. Students will be able to use the dice, dominoes, and disks in order to create their own problems and solve them rather than doing everything through the textbook or worksheets.
