Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I can remember learning my multiplication facts as a child, and it was a daunting task! Some math concepts are so difficult to grasp and yet so important for life! Help my special needs students learn difficult math concepts like regrouping, elapsed time, graphing data, and basic number sense!!!
I provide special education services to some amazing students in grades 1-4.
These students have a variety of needs including learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, autism, and severe cognitive impairments, to name a few. They face many challenges and require different modes of instruction in order for them to gain access to an education. Many are English Language Learners.
Our school is located in a large urban city in CT. I have the rare opportunity of turning these students on to learning. It is a privilege to work with these special students who are near and dear to me.
My Project
These materials are structured, visual, and engaging. The regrouping activity chart will allow me to show the multi-step process of regrouping in a clear and concise way. The hands-on addition and subtraction regrouping kits will provide extra practice and step by step visual supports for the students. The elapsed time instant learning center will show how to count forward and backward on the clock to determine elapsed time. The elapsed time rulers will provide the students with an alternative approach to time!
The magnetic number line will provide constant visual support of the instruction and allow the number line to be at the student level so they can touch and count the numbers.
The materials in this project will help me develop hands-on activities and lessons that will teach critical math skills. Our students will learn skills such as counting, adding, subtracting, graphing, and telling time! I hope to use these materials to create alternative methods of teaching and learning!
Students with special needs face challenges making it difficult to understand and relate to what they learn in school.
Many of my students are turned off by school because they haven't had much success. Hands-on activities, visuals, and thematic units build schema leading to confidence across the curriculum!
"Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another." -- Marva Collins
