This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low-income high-needs urban community, which I have loved serving for the past 13 years. We are a Title I school, where 100% of our students receive free lunch. This is a community that has endured the worst that poverty and violence has to offer but continues to overcome every challenge by rebuilding and transforming the neighborhood. This resilience and enthusiasm is reflected in our children.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, and all arrive in my classroom eager to learn, to succeed, and to feel safe and loved.
My goal as their teacher, is to make sure these needs are met every day. I want to provide them with every opportunity afforded to others. I hope you will join me!
My Project
These materials will offer my students a variety of opportunities to manipulate numbers, identify numerals, and associate quantities to their numeric representation. The ten frames will help them represent and visualize quantities, starting with numbers to five, up to ten, and then teens and beyond! The magnetic number bonds and "I See 10!" game will be great for students to deconstruct numbers, discovering how lesser numbers can be put together to make greater ones. Wikki Stix are so versatile; students can use them to reinforce number recognition while practicing proper formation.
It is essential for students to develop strong number sense in Kindergarten.
After all, it is the foundation for all that is to come! I know that these materials will offer engaging opportunities for learning. I want my kids to be excited about math, and I know they will when they can be hard at work while having a bit of fun!
