When we left school on March 13, we didn't know that we wouldn't be setting foot in our school for the rest of the school year. Overnight, our school year was turned upside down. With changing projections about the ability to teach in-person next year, teachers like me are preparing for students to be out of the classroom for at least a portion of the year. I want to ensure my students have the tools they need to be successful at their fingertips.
Despite the challenges that exist in this strange time in our world today, my students are eager to continue to learn and grow.
Third grade is a critical year in math concept development, and my students are up to the task! Students come to my urban classroom with a range of academic needs. After completing the last months of school remotely, many students will need extra scaffolding and support.
My Project
In third grade, students learn many foundational skills for higher-level math practices. Understanding place value, multiplication, division, and fractions are all topics that are critical for students to understand well by the end of third grade.
Students learn best when they can engage with manipulatives and hands-on materials.
I am requesting two types of individually packaged manipulatives. Base-10 blocks are crucial to understanding the value of numbers. Students can represent numbers, compare place value, add and subtract larger numbers, and explain multiplication and division concepts with these blocks. Fraction strips are a great tool for students to understand the relative size of numbers less than one. We use fraction strips to compare, add, and subtract fractions and reason with numbers. These manipulatives each come in their own individual packs, so students do not have to share materials and can minimize the spread of germs if the packs are used in the classroom for part of the year. Individual manipulative sets can also be sent home easily, so students can use the tools for distance learning.
Thank you for your support of our schools during this uncertain time!
