My low socio-economic students are soaring in the classroom and need to grow outside too! I have a combined class of students having English as their first language and English Second Language learners as well as those with special learning needs. Many of my students have never experienced the joys of a good book and a percentage of family members who have never completed high school. My school is involved in a federal program that provides all students with free breakfast and lunch as the largest percentage are already free or reduced meals.
My Project
The rekenreks will assist students in building their abstract math ideas to make the knowledge more concrete. Students will not simply memorize math equations, but have a solid understanding of what the equations mean and what they look like. The ten-frame dice will provide an additional fun activity to further expand students' knowledge of math equations and what equations truly look like not just how the number combinations are memorized. Furthermore, blank dice will allow me to choose numbers related specifically to a student's individual need and level of math understanding.
Students will have their own tools to gain hands own experiences with math.
They will build their abstract understanding of math through concrete methods. The best is that the students will be having fun and the learning will sneak up on them!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
