Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Unfortunately some students begin kindergarten not knowing many math concepts. I love the challenge of teaching these students, seeing their confidence grow as they learn. By this time in the school year, all students know the basics. Now it's time to work on logic and other higher skills.
I teach 22 wonderful kindergarteners at a great elementary school in a small town in Texas.
My students come from loving families that are struggling in these hard economic times. Over 90 percent of the students at my school come from low-income households. Most receive free lunch. All students are now receiving free breakfast through a federal program. With their bodies nourished, it's time to feed their minds.
My Project
There are so many math concepts to learn in kindergarten. My students love learning and especially enjoy hands-on activities. With workbooks that provide activities for shapes, patterns, 10 frames, and pattern blocks my students will receive plenty of additional enrichment on these topics. Foam dice with 4, 6, 8, and 10 sides will allow a fun way to practice addition and subtraction and review number sense. A hundreds number board will encourage whole class participation in activities focusing on numbers up to 100. The Zimbbos wooden elephant stacking game is a great way to reinforce numbers and practice logical thinking. Finally, a Rock and Learn Addition and Subtraction DVD will get students up and moving, while learning in a fun way.
I love building a solid math foundation for my students.
With the requested materials in this project, students will finish the year strong and be ready for first grade and beyond. Math centers and whole group math time will help my students think logically and become awesome mathematicians!
