This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My school started a new Math curriculum this year. We were given the resource books and materials, and we even went to good professional development sessions supporting this series. However, the teachers are missing one extremely important piece to this curriculum's puzzle, the supporting literature. Many lessons and units in this Kindergarten curriculum require or strongly suggest the use of certain read alouds to teach the lessons and secure student understanding of concepts. It is so difficult to do a lesson on creating a class counting book modeled after Donald Crew's Ten Black Dots when you don't have the book to read to your class. Unfortunately this happens often when planing and implementing this curriculum and it is difficult to purchase or track these titles down at the library every week. Therefore, I am requesting a number of books that will greatly enhance the quality of Math instruction that my Kindergarteners receive. One reason I think it is so important to use this literature alongside the lessons of the curriculum is that my students from Chicago's South Side don't always get a lot of exposure to good quality literature outside of the classroom. I think it is important to expose these students to as much good literature as possible and that includes literature relevant to all parts and subjects of our day. I need these books to help enhance student understanding of everyday Kindergarten mathematical concepts, and I need these books available in my classroom for daily read alouds or individual student reading so that students will become familiar and comfortable with the texts and, therefore, the mathematical concepts they are learning.
